The Pre- production process

Pre- production process

Type of moving image productions

The media product we produced and what it was for.

For unit one we were told to create a short film which lasted for 90 seconds. The competition was called depict which is an international competition created by Brief Encounters, they have a winner and three runners up every year since 1998. Before we made our own depict video we watched some of the other depict videos from this year and choose who we thought the winner and runner ups should be before we were told. The one I did not like which was called 'A thing' became the winner. I didn't like it because the story line was just watching a man create something out of wood and for me I feel like the other films put so much more effort in creating what they did and for them to loose to that must be heart breaking.

How did we distribute it?

We then had to come up with some of our own ideas for short films we would create and put on depict. We then showed our ideas to our group members and my group members were Vlad and Luis. My Idea was called hide and seek but the genre for this would be horror as we would edit it to make it look darker and the camera angles would make the seeker look scarier. But we didn't go with my idea as it didn't really have a strong narrative structure. So in the end we decided to go for Vlad's idea which was him in a dream sequence and he sees a scary figure in his locker and then he suddenly wakes up again. Once we finished filming and editing our video we then posted it onto YouTube and our blogs so people around the world will be able to see what we have created and maybe if enough people watch our depict video we will know that it is good enough to put onto the Depict website itself.

What other types of moving image products are there?
  • Adverts
  • Music videos
Adverts:

Some people are irritated by adverts as they commonly appear during a programme you are watching and you just want to fast forward through them, so you can watch the programme without any interference. Although, companies see it as good thing to do because it gives them a chance to sell their product to a wider range of their target audience. A way a company gets their audience to remember what product it was and where to get it from is to either put it in big bold writing at the end or a catchy tune or even a slogan at the end.

For example the advert I always remember is Frubes as their slogan was ' Frubes rip their heads off and suck their guts out'. This could show that they were trying to get kids attention so they can then say to their parent's that they want to have that. The advert itself was in cartoon form which is how many children's programmes are like.

Adverts are very powerful things as they make people desire to have something they want and not what they need. Adverts are more expensive to advertise if they are in prime time than any other time. They are also shown on different channels at different times depending on what their target audience watches otherwise they might not make any profit if no one who likes it doesn't see it.

Music Videos:

Any song that you listen to will have a music video with it. This is to show you how the character feels or to signify how the singer is feeling inside and they just have to get people to understand them. Like films, music videos tells a story through cinematography and sound which is the song and some of them even have a narrative structure. Music videos will always be part of our history as people talk about them all the either because of how good they are, how weird they are or how bad they are.

An example would be Lady Gaga in paparazzi as it starts off with her and her boyfriend and he sees the paparazzi so carry's on kissing her, then she falls and is no more and at the end of the music video she kills her boyfriend. This video alone shows two sides of celebrities for the paparazzi which is some people hate their picture being taken and their life being in the newspaper and the other one is, is that people do stupid or dangerous things to be known.

What different distribution methods are there?

For ours we decided to use YouTube as everybody in world who have internet access use YouTube and so many people have became famous because of it, for example Justin Beiber started singing songs on YouTube and because of this an agent or producer found him and from there on he became famous.

There are many different distribution methods that we could have used to promote our 90 seconds Depict film, these are some examples:

  • Twitter
  • Facebook
  • College
  • Billboards

Twitter:

It could be sent around on twitter as twitter is a global network where you can follow your friends or famous people and speak your mind within reason. I think it would be good if we posted something on here as maybe some, well known directors like Stephen Spielberg will see it and comment about it. I don't think that Twitter is good to post videos on there as it's more about what comments people put than what the watch.

Facebook:

Facebook would be a good place to post our videos we created as we are able to make our own Facebook page and people can choose whether or not they like it and even comment about it, just like YouTube. The only problem with Facebook is, is that it will probably only be our friends who will like our Facebook page.

 College:

We could have promoted our video on the TVs around college so one, the college would know what kind of work we do in media BTEC and two, so people can tell us what they think of our depict film and whether they thought it was good enough to put it on the depict website. I also think it is a good idea as they could then tell their friends about it so then they would want to watch it but that will only work if our Depict film was good enough which I think it would be.

Billboards:

If we had enough money we could put up posters about our Depict video on billboards and saying come vote now. This way people will not only recognise our video but know about the competition we would be entering so they could then vote for us and maybe inspire them to make their own. The only problem is that most billboards are in cities like London so not many people living on the outskirts would know about it.

These are all good ways of distribution as well as using the internet because more than two billion people use the internet and in 2009 250 million people use Facebook and has probably increased over the years. 500 million people estimated by top chart use Twitter in 2013. So because of the amount of people who use these sites advertisers have an advantage as it is more than likely that their target audience use them. Especially if LYNX is advertising ad for one of their products they are more than likely to advertise it on Facebook as their target audience are mainly between the ages of 16-30.

Finance and Funding

If you really want to make your own film but you can't afford to make one without a little bit of help there are many funding opportunities for you, these are some of them:
  • Lottery/BFI
  • Self Funding
  • Loans
  • Crowd Funding
Lottery/BFI:

The BFI which is the British Film Institute is a charity which helps new and known filmmakers.  Now the BFI only help known filmmakers unless it is a documentary or an animated film these have been the rules since August 2013. What they do is award lottery funding to film productions, distributers, audience development, education and market intelligence and research.  The BFI award the National Lottery funding to support UK film productions. The National Lottery have 12 funds another one of them is the UK Film council but the BFI took over that as they were cut.

The BFI help fund many films some of them include Alan Partridge Alpha Papa, a drama series called Exhibition, Seven Psychopaths, Belle and many more. As well all of the films or TV programmes I just mentioned were only from 2013 so imagine how many they have helped since they began.

Self Funding:

If you don't want to pay money back to banks that you have loaned money from you can just start saving up your own money or you could tell your friends and family about your idea and ask if they would like to give you some money towards the funding for it. A group called Porcelain Presence said that they were glad they self funded their short film that developed into a feature because they are able to film things within their own time limit. They also said it that because it was one of their first features it gave them time to be the best as they possibly can. Their university let them borrow some camera equipment lights, track, dolly and jib. They over spent money on decorations and painting for the set.

 Loans:

If you need a lot of money to help finance your film the best thing to do is get a loan from the bank. As you are taking money from the bank whatever happens to the film you produce you have to give the money back to them.

Crowd Funding:

Crowd funding is a form of a group of people who negotiate and operate towards money and resources to support a project. I have read an article from The guardian dated the 8th December 2013 and it tells you about crowd funding but also tells you about who has done crowd funding and how well they are known now. I have copied and pasted a bit of the article about Lizzie Gillett.

This shows that she has put all her effort into trying to pursue her dreams which she has done through crowd funding.

Requirements

What will the money be spent on?

Everything which is used for a moving image comes with a price tag as they are all equally important like the costume designers, Special Effects (SFX), Actors, Crew and advertisement. These are the reasons why.

Pre-Production

The Costume designers are important as they have to create the costumes or, choose costumes to suit an actors character. Take The big bang theory for example which is a comedy series they wear the same sort of outfit for there characters every time you see them on screen. Each character has their own part of the wardrobe which just shows that a costume is what defines a character.

Production

Actors:

Depending what your film budget is you have to give a certain amount to the actors who star in the film. The actors get a lot of money as you wouldn't be able to produce a film without them. Even though most people say anyone can act, that's probably right but you have to be good at remembering lines and it's how an actor express their emotions that defines whether or not they are good. As well some people only go to watch films to see a certain actor perform so sometimes its vital you choose the right person for a job.
An example of this is Jonny Depp as he can play so many different characters. In Edward Scissor Hand he played a character who's a bit of an outsider because his hands are made up of scissors, then he plays a character from Pirates of the Caribbean called Captain Jack Sparrow who's crazy and is drunk most of the time. People love him because he can play crazy characters and he can make us fall in love with them. I couldn't think of anyone else to play these parts other than him.

Crew:

The crew are also important as without having them you wouldn't be create a film as they are the ones recording it and setting up the scene. They also have to set up the lighting for each scene. The crew have different wages depending how high up their job was. Like if you were a director of photography they would earn more than a runner because they sort out a lot more things like the lighting, editing and cinematography.

Post Production

SFX:

Special effects have been used in films since 1895 for stop motion. Since then it is still developing and will carry on developing. CGI is used a lot in films now a days and was created in the 90s. Special Effects are very expensive to use and because of this they are now commonly used in high budget films.

An example of this is Avatar who used special effects to create a world entirely different from ours. 60% was computer generated to create the colourful and different creatures. Some of the visual effects were new to create this kind of 3D film. It took them nearly 10 years to make. I myself absolutely loved the film because of how bright the special effects made the colours look and it made me want to live in a world like that. But not many of my friends like it because they didn't like the storyline.

Advertisement:

A lot of money goes into the advertisement so viewers will know when the film will be coming out and to persuade them to go and watch it. Everywhere you go there are people advertising things but movies are usually advertised at bus shelters,  the Underground, on buses, during adverts on TV and magazines or newspapers. This is so most people in the country can see it, advertisers do this so they can get a broader range of customers.

What did you have to obtain for your depict?

For our Depict project we had to get some props and camera equipment. We required some pens and papers for the first scene which is in a classroom to show that students were actually doing work like they would be doing in a normal class situation. To get these we asked our teacher if we could have some pieces of paper. For the pens we asked the extras who were playing the students to get out their own pen. We also needed a scary mask so we could make it the scary image in the dream sequence. To get the scary masked we went to the prop room and looked for a good scary mask their and put it back their once we were finished with it. We had to get more actors as we needed some scenes to look like people were being taught by a teacher. To do this we asked people in our media class if they wanted to help us out with our Depict video. Another thing we needed was camera equipment so we were able to film our Depict video. To get the equipment we went to the AV room and borrowed a camera and a tripod.

 Personnel

Crew:

A low budget short

Depending on how low the budget is you might not have to pay for the crew, so its best to look for people who would like work with camera equipment in the future so they will need experience. If that doesn't work out you can even ask your friends. If not  As for the equipment a green screen is quiet cheap to get and if you really had to you could use your phone to film things or a camera you already have. Also if you have a low budget you can save on a lot of money depending where you film like you can film in your own house as long as you have the house holder's permission. An example of someone who made a low budget film is The Blair Witch Project directed by Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick their budget was between $20,000 to $25,000.

A television programme

As we have so many channels that we can watch there are many programmes that are made for our entertainment. Most of the crew now used for TV productions are self employed  and others are with the channel itself. A camera operator can earn up to 30k a year. Like a Hollywood film it is much easier to get a job by who you know not what you know. Some of the equipment they need comes with the person they hire like BBC could ask for someone with good camera skills with a 16mm camera. Tv Soaps writers and actors earn a third of the income and the writers can earn £6,000 - £12,000 per episode, depending on experience.

An example is Downton Abby, as the person who created it and write it, is an Oscar award winner for writer, Julian Fellowes. The third series of Downton Abby had 11.8 million viewers over its eight episodes. Its one so many awards even a Golden Globe one. One of the Gold Panda awards was for best photography by Nigel Willoughby.

Hollywood feature film

In a Hollywood film, things are very different as a low budget film is classed as 10 - 12 million and under so to me and you a million is a lot so you can see how much money they are able to spend on all the crew. They can have high-tech cameras and all the equipment they think they need to make it good. They could afford to get a crane or a helicopter to film the landscape. If they needed it they could get CGI and special effects to make it look even better and to do this they could afford the best software. If they wanted to they could film in public places but they would even be able to afford a studio.

An example of a high budget film is 2012 directed by Roland Emmerich who also directed films like The day after tomorrow, Independence Day, Godzilla and 10,000 BC. The film 2012 earned £6, 489 809 on its opening weekend in England. David Brenner an editor has worked beside him on 2012, Independence Day and The day after Tomorrow. This goes with my point that its mostly about who you know not what you know.

An editor depending on their status can earn a lot of money. An idea of this is on the picture below.

Who performed what role in Deep within for Depict?

Vlad was the actor and editor in our group. We decided as a group that he should be the actor as he came up with the idea for Deep within, which was that somebody is bored in class and they fall asleep. They then go to their locker and see a scary figure inside of it and then they wake up.

I was the time keeper and made sure that everything was finished on time and that we weren't distracted by anything like coming off topic. I think I done really well for this job as I could still be there friend but if I felt like we were coming off topic I would tell them with a stern voice and they would then listen to me and get on with the work they had to do. I helped with a little bit of the filming but they didn't use any of my bits that I did film when they edited it. I would have also of helped with the editing but due to absence I wasn't able to.

Luis was the main cameraman as he filmed most of the footage which was then edited together. Luis was also the main editor and asked Vlad what music and clips they should put together. He also write the risk assessment sheet.

Overall I am really glad I worked with the people I was put with as we shared out all the work fairly and if we had anything to say about what someone had done or someone had an idea we would listen and discuss together what we thought about it.

Cast/other contributes:

Other people that might contribute to a media production is extras, they are the people who help liven up a scene so the main characters are put in a normal situation like walking on the streets. You also have set designers who design the setting for scenes in studios or make sure that if they are using natural scenery that it is exactly the right place they want to film at. An example of this is Thor The Dark World as part of that film is set in London, Surry and the rest in a studio. They also filmed in Iceland, the Stonehenge and the Old Royal Navel College. They used Shepperton Studios between October and December probably to have some of the acting done in front of a green screen for places like Asgard where Thor is from.

Another thing that is quite important is the make up for the characters. This is important as if an actress was playing a wicked witch they might paint the actress green, give her a bigger nose and give her a massive spot. This is to help make characters more believable. An example of this is Lord of the Rings who's top make up and hair designers were Peter King and Peter Owen. Each principle actor had their own wig which was washed, styled and cared for. It was important for them to consider colour, style shape and length for each character. They worked carefully with the prosthetic artist so the characters would look more believable.

Another contributor to films is researchers, researchers work out the cost, who would be best to cast, what studio they should use and where the setting should be. Researchers are important because they go into depth about the financial issues and what the play can relate to.

Time

Meeting deadlines:

Time management is a very important thing for any job in the world. It is important that you get to work on time or when you are needed because if you do not get to your work on time you only get three warnings given to you and you could get fired. Getting to work on time also shows that your reliable, punctual and organised. Meeting deadline for work is different from being, at work on time as its not just you that everyone is relying on, it's also the quality of your work and how good your idea is. If you don't meet your deadline on time it shows that your not committed to working as a team and your not bothered about the company.  If you do meet deadlines it shows that your committed to work hard and being there for your team. It also shows that your eager to show everyone the ideas that you have come up with.
Say if you were a film writer you would have to give the script within a deadline because other people have might only be able to start there job until after the writer has done his/hers part. If the writer does not meet this deadline then the film could be delayed for months.

My groups time management:

As a group we all helped each other with deadlines to make sure our work was in on time. To do this I allocated  Vlad and Luis what sheets they would want to do. We each done the sheets that we wanted to do and made sure we had them fairly handed out so no one done more than someone else. We also made sure we filled out the storey board equally not just to complete it fairly but also to make sure that everyone got to share their ideas and that everyone understood what we were doing. If we felt like we weren't going to get our homework in on time then we would do it as homework so it would be.

Equipment/Facilities

The equipment we used:

When we were filming our short Depict film we used a tripod and a camera to film it all. The reason we needed a tripod was so that if we were doing a panning show or a tracking shot we would be able to move it with more stability. If we decided to do a panning shot while holding the camera the footage would probably be shaky as the person holding it could be nervous, so it is easier to put it onto a tripod. As none of us had our own tripod we had to borrow one from the AV room and we would give it back at the end of each lesson.
Most camera men/women are free lancers now and they normally have their own equipment. Some studios would probably get rates to rent out some camera equipment because they have a big budget and space they probably could use an arc, crane shot and a crab. A rate card is a card that gives you rates of how much equipment would cost depending on how long you want to use it for.

An example of the camera crew using their equipment is Harry Potter in this short video below.

In the video you are watching behind the scenes in the Deathly Hallows part 2 and in it you can see mostly high tech cameras used to show tracking, close ups, medium shots and crane shot.

Locations:

Where we filmed:

We decided to film our Depict film in college in our Media classroom and the hallway outside it and a row of lockers. We wanted to film in college because the storyline of our Depict video was about a boy who falls asleep in class. We used the media classroom as that was the only room available near us that we could use. At first we didn't want to use that classroom but in the end we really liked using our media classroom as the tables were set out perfectly for doing a panning shot as we could get all the extras as students in. We wanted to use the hallway to use it as a transition for Vlad to get to his locker. We needed to have a row of lockers as one of our locations as we needed to film Vlad opening a locker as Vlad was going to find a monster inside it.

Issues and risks:

One issue that we faced was that Vlad forgot his locker key so we had to find another locker to use. To overcome this issue we then went to my locker but we didn't want to use that because it was too low down but luckily Vlad found a locker near it which was positioned in the right place. Another issue we faced was that when we were in the hallway with the lockers people kept on coming past us while or just before we were about to film. To resolve this issue we had one person stand at one end of the corridor to see if someone was coming or we would wait a few second after someone has left to then film.
One risk that we had to face was the people who were coming past us could trip over the equipment we had out, so to stop this from happening we always had me Vlad or Luis standing by the tripod or if we weren't filming we would move it to the side.

Materials:

Materials you may need for a production:
  • Sound Track
  • SFX

Sound track:

A sound track helps bring the world of the television alive as it implies what is going to happen next. Like in Jaws we know that something bad is about to happen as soon as we hear the famous sound track which is parallel with the mood. Without it we wouldn't of known what was going to happen. As well if it was contrapuntal sound we would have seen the shark in a less serious way. There are two ways you can get a soundtrack. One way is to email people who's soundtrack you want and ask them if you can use it, so you don't break copyright laws and another way is to make your own sound track.
An example is the sound track in The last of the Mohicans which its main theme tune was taken by The Gael written by Dougie MacLean. The film won an Oscar for best sound mixing in 1992.

SFX:

Special effects help makes the film more believable as it can make anything or anyone look real. In Superman we feel that the Planet Cripton is real because the effects specialists were able to imagine a world where these people live and what devices would be futuristic to humans. Most special effects are computer generated.

Risk Assessments and Location recces and releases:

For the pre-production we had to fill out a risk assessment sheet, location recces and releases. A risk assessment is writing down all the accidents that could happen while filming
to make sure we have labelled some risks that could occur to us or the public when filming. Like if we were filming in the hallway we had to make sure that none of the public tripped over the tripod. It was important that we filled it out because if anything did happen to us at least we have a risk assessment filled out that shows that we knew an accident could happen. We also had to do location recces which was taking pictures of places that we wanted and emailing the owners/policemen if it was in public or at someone's house but because we were using the college we already had permission. If we wanted to film in public and didn't get permission we couldn't film there because it would be going against them and could disrupt the public and get the college in trouble. Releases are forms that have to be signed by anybody acting in a film, if you have anyone under the age of 18 you had to make sure their parents sign the form so we have their permission for their son/daughter be in our film which could be distributed on YouTube. We had to hand out the whole class talent release forms as they all needed to take part in our Depict film.

Legal Issues:

The legal consideration you need to think of for a media production is that you stick to copyright rules and you don't do anything illegal. What you need to think of is about where you are getting everything from, like sound are you making it or are you going to use existing material. You also have to make sure that if you use any references from other films that you have permission to use it. if you do not abide be these rule your company could be sued or even worse you could get put in jail.

Copyright:

Copyright is important because it makes sure the owner of a creative piece of work is protected against people who want to try and use it as their own piece of work. Even though copyright is for everyone around the world it is interpreted differently in different countries.  Copyright is more complex for a film as there are many different things you need to get to make up a film. some of these things are:

  • Artistic
  • Dramatic
  • Literary
  • Musical
  • Film
  • Sound recordings
  • Broadcasts and cable usage
  • Performance
  • Published editions

This shows us that this could be part of the reason why films take so long to be released in cinemas. As thee are so many things that need to be copyrighted when you want to make a film also takes maybe not that much but some of the money from your film budget. Copyright has to originate from the author with their hard work put into it but the work does not have to be imaginative or new to be protected. When the author or person who needed the copyright dies it is still under copyright protection for 70 years. When a film is made and the last person out of the director, composer, writer or producer to die the film is then protected for another 70 years.
Another website Called Mechanical Performing Rights Society help people in the music career. Performing rights helps the publisher, composer or songwriter by paying them royalties whenever their song is played publicly whether on radio, in a shop or on TV. Mechanical rights is different because it gives royalties to a songwriter, publisher or composer when the product is being reproduced or broadcasted or online.

Clearance:

Clearance is when you get permission to use someone else's intellectual property for your creative product. Intellectual property means that a film you created is yours and you control and you are able to control anybody else who wants to use it. An example of this is if we were to use one of Tom Odell's songs we be using someone else's intellectual property so we would have to get their permission to be able to use it.

Public Liability Insurance:

Public Liability insurance is made to protect a business in case anything happens to the public and someone wanted to make a claim about their injury.  For example my group were shooting in the college, if one of us fell over some wires around the college we could get compensation from the college. This was an public protection act made in 1991 this makes sure that people are covered if they have an accident.

OFCOM:

OFCOM is a regulatory body and a regulatory body is set out to protect the public. It is different from professional bodies as its established by the basis of legal mandate. OFCOM is an independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communication industries. OFCOM regulate TV, Radio sectors, fixed line telecoms, mobiles and a few more things.

BBFC:

The BBFC stands for the British Board of Film Classification and it is an independent, non governmental body which was set up in 1912 and has been classifying films and videos ever since and DVD's  since 1984. Working as an independent, self funding regulator there mission is to protect the public, empower the public, recognise and respect adult freedom and many more things.

Trade Unions and trade associations:

A trade union is an organisation made up members who are mainly workers. They help and protect members in the work place. The founders of trade unions go back to the 18th Century. Most trade unions are indepent from any emplyer. A Trade union has to sometimes work close with an employer. This is a partnership agreement that sorts out their common interests and objectives. Most agreements are reached volountarily but sometimes they need help from Labour Relations Agency. Trade unions help with industrial action, elections and argent matters. Trade unions are important because they help employers if there is a problem within there business. For example teachers strikes happen if the unions feel like they arn't happy with the cuts being made or not giving teachers enough money.
A trade association is an organisation founded and funded by businesses in a particlar industry. The ASA, ABB, ABTA and AUT are some examples of trade associations. The ASA stands for Advertising Standared Authority which regulates media  businesses such as TV, film, internet, sales promotion and direct marketing. They make sure that ads are legal by applying advertisement codes. BECTU is an indepent union for workers who work in the broadcasting, film, independent production, theatre and arts and the digital media. They have 25,000 members who they help out with conditions and contracts, negotiations, advice, training support and many other things. PACT on the other hand is a UK trade association representing and promoting comercial interests of independent film, television, digital, childrens and animation media companies.  They help there members with legal and business affairs advice.

  1. Lauren,
This is a good first post but it is example heavy in places, where you are more confident and a little less so in others, where maybe, you could do a little more research. If you focus more on theory than evaluation, you will bring the grade up really quickly. I have awarded P1 for this task, but as I said, you can raise this quickly by following the below guidance:
    • Use far more examples from with the creative media industry, e.g., look up Heaven’s Gate when discussing deadlines *hint hint*
    • Spend a little less time defining things like Facebook and Twitter at the start but instead, say how they are effective tools of distribution (do remember that the INTERNET is the distribution method though)
    • Mention crowd funding/’ebegging’ and private investors for sources of finance and find real examples for each, e.g., Megan Ellison, Vin Diesel etc.
    • Link cost of cast/crew to experience and give examples
    • Add details on props masters, costume designers, experts, researchers etc., for ‘contributors’ as extras are really classed as talent
    • Find a rates card, embed it on your blog and explain what it is
    • Add clear definitions of recces and releases and specify how they are different from each other
    • ‘Blog up’ your post throughout by adding clips, images, news articles etc., where necessary. These are needed to achieve the top grades and also act as examples too.
If you are unsure on anything, please see Sean or I and we will help you (we know it’s because you were away so don’t be afraid to ask for help!)
