1 - Breaking The Mould
I choose breaking the mould as I liked how it showed the life cycle. The person who created this animation added humour to the film by things like the apple feeling sick or seeing an advert, advertising apple juice. The genre is adventure as the apple travels far far away to an orchard and on the journey finds different ways of transportation and stops off at a barber's shop. I don't really think that breaking the mould has a narrative structure as it only has a main protagonist and goes on a quest and then ends with a closure.
There was identification in this short animation movie as you knew where the apple was going throughout the whole animation. This gives us an idea of where the apple is going. There was no suspense during breaking the mould.
Mise-en-scene
The setting at the beginning of breaking the mould is in the city near a main road at night. We know this because there are many tall buildings near by and the apple drops into a van. We know it is night because we can see the moon and stars. As this is an animation, through some parts of the film there are just white backgrounds with objects placed in front signifying a certain place. At the end of the film the setting is the orchard where the apple has been trying to get to. We know its an orchard becasue you can see lots of trees.
As this is an animation there is no lighting that is used. But you could say that the colour's that are used in this animation are there instead of lighting as in the first scene it is meant to be night but the colour peach takes most of the background. As the background is a peachy colour it gives a peaceful and calm feeling to the spectators.
As the characters in this animation are not real I can't really tell you how well they performed. What I can say though is that we fall in love with this apple as we see from the beginning to the very end and we know that we have been through the apples life cycle because we see a moustache on the apple at the end.
Cinematography
In this animation the most common shots in this is close ups and long shots/ establishing shots. In most of the scenes in this short film the apple is placed in the centre of the screen. This is so the audience knows that the apple is the main character. Even though this is a happy, calming animation they could use high angles or low angles to make the apple seem powerful or weak. There is an eye line match used in this as seen above but uses different techniques such as dashes that look like they have been drawn on. This shows the characteristics of the film as it isn't a professional film but the person who made this added their personal touch to it by sketching most of the things in this film.
Editing
I think Breaking the mould was created on a software like movie soup as the editing was kept simple and had no fade in's or out's. Also some of the background has been edited in like the mountains because what they have done is edit out part of the map to make it fit into the shapes of mountains. If I made this I would of added a wipe down when the apple gets eaten by the fish, so the audience could see what was going on under water.
Sound
The sound used in this is non diagetic score. This asynchronous sound gives a happy, calming feel to the atmosphere of the music. It stays the same pitch level the whole way through the film. I think this is a lovely animation and if you get the chance you should watch it.
