Continuity Exercise Evaluation - Delivery

The title: Delivery

We wanted the title delivery to be dramatic so we decided to split up the 'DE' from delivery and added a fade to it to leave the spectators in suspense.  The rest of the word 'LIVERY' then wiped in a second later. We then added some dramatic music as it blended well with the title. We moved the music clip around on premiere pro to make sure the beat would be in time with when the title appeared. We then finished it by making the title fade away.

Mise-en-scene
The main prop in our video is the exam papers as they appear in most scenes also they are what the video is about.  We didn't want the spectators to know what was on the papers because it would draw them in to want to watch more. I think we could have improved our video by changing the costumes we were wearing, as I don't think a teacher would wear what I was wearing in the video as it isn't very formal.

Lighting
In this video we used ambient lighting as we were in natural surroundings. I think the best scene that shows ambient lighting at its best, is when we use the point of view shot/eye line match when I look outside the window. When I open the blind light breaks through the classroom as the classroom wasn't very bright.

High or low camera angles
In our video we had two high camera angles at the beginning of our sequence, when I was acting impatient. We made the first high angle shot as we wanted the spectators to see all the objects on the desk so they know I am in a classroom. We then added the second high angle shot which was a close up of my hand to show me getting more and more impatient.

Camera movement
The camera movement we decided to use in our video was tracking. We used tracking to track the man who was bringing the papers to the woman. We made it a low angle shot as we didn't want to show the mans face.

Fades
We used fades not only for the scenes but also for the sound. We used fade outs for the sound so it doesn't suddenly jump to the next piece of music. We also used a  fade out and in at the end to make the exam answers look more classified and dangerous.

180 Degree rule
We used the 180 Degree rule in our video to show the passing of the pieces of paper to the teacher who I played from another teacher who was played by Luis.  We did break the 180 degree rule which we didn't realise until Shaun showed us where we went wrong. I will print screen where we went wrong.

Establishing shot
We used an establishing shot at the beginning of the video as it showed a teachers desk and a table near by, so straight away the audience can see that we are situated in a classroom. I don't think that we needed to get a bigger establishing shot as we got everything we needed in the video to show that it was set in a classroom/ college.

Match on action
We had two match on action's in our video. The first one was when I was walking towards the window and I opened the curtain. The second one was when I sat down at my desk and pulled my phone out. I think by doing this video I realise that match on actions pop up quite frequently in films or TV programmes.

Eye line match
We had two eye line matches in our video one where I was looking outside a window and the second one I was looking at a clock. This is so the audience know I am waiting for something and getting impatient while I am waiting for it.

Point of view
We used a point of view shot to show me looking at my phone, looking to see if I have any messages and to know what the time is.

Shot reverse shot
We used a shot reverse shot near the end of our video to show the passing of the exam answers.

I really enjoyed making this video and it really helped give me more of an understanding of how to use the camera equipment and how to make scenes flow together nicely by the continuity system and editing software. I really enjoyed being in front of the camera as I do performing arts so I am used to performing in front of people so I wasn't nervous. What I haven't done before is performed in front of a camera on its own with just the camera operators, so I found it very hard not to stare directly into the camera. Next time we make a video I would like to be a camera operator as I didn't get a chance this time to be one as I was the main character. I really enjoyed editing and find it amazing that you can add all these different effects to a video and can create a story of your own using these clips. The only thing I think did not work for our video is the sound as it just didn't make sense with the story line.

  1. An excellent analysis Lauren - well done. Some of your screenshots appear to be missing though... and your bit on the 180 degree rule could be explained more thoroughly. Otherwise great stuff.
